7 Days – BEST Key West and Miami Family Trip Itinerary
Key West and Miami family trip itinerary – our second trip to Key West this year was just what we were hoping for, some rest, relaxation, fun, and family time. The first day we arrived was my husband’s birthday, so we were ready to celebrate big in our favorite town! No matter how many times we come here, it never gets old. We always discover something new. Our flight left RDU at 5:45am and we arrived in Key West by 9:25am with a connection through Charlotte. Super easy with American Airlines. The kids are happy and ready to get this party started on our Key West and Miami family trip itinerary.
Day 1 – Birthday lunch at Stock Rock Cafe
We arrived, picked up the rental car and we were on our way a few blocks to our hotel, Margaritaville Beach House Key West. We were able to check-in early, unpack and then drove over to Stock Rock Café for a birthday lunch. The weather was gorgeous and a perfect day to start our trip.

Then we hit the pool, as usual, on the first day. It was a great way for the kids to relax on our first day of our Key West and Miami family trip itinerary.
For dinner to celebrate daddy’s birthday, we hit the Harbor Walk where there are an array of seafood restaurants to choose from. We love this little area. Alonzo’s Oyster Bar is a favorite!
We were excited to be back. Our Happy Place!
Day 2 – Breakfast at Sunset Key
We hopped on the ferry boat at Opal Key Resort and cruised over to Sunset Key for breakfast on the water.
After breakfast, we walked around the beach at Sunset Key and hung out for a little bit.
After the ferry dropped us off at Opal Key, we walked around Sunset Waterfront Shoppes – our favorite store in this area is Saltwater Angler and we stop here every time we are in Key West so make sure and add it on your Key West and Miami family trip itinerary.
We like to stop by the Truman Waterfront Park for the kids, then over to Fort Zachary Taylor. There is a cool beach here and a grill where we like to stop for lunch and eat at the picnic tables overlooking the ocean.

Day 3 – Fishing with Rush Maltz from Local Knowledge
My husband and son were excited today to have the opportunity to fish with Captain Rush Maltz from Local Knowledge TV. They watch Rush on Sunday mornings and could not wait to be on his boat in the middle of the ocean. To book a charter with Rush, click here. You will definitely want to book a fishing charter on your Key West and Miami family trip itinerary.
While the boys fished, my daughter and I played at the six pools at Oceans Edge Resort, went to a few shops and lunch at my absolute favorite restaurant, Banana Cafe. You will definitely want to pencil in a stop at Banana Cafe on your Key West and Miami family trip itinerary.
After the boys came in from fishing, we cleaned up for dinner. Mangoes on Duval Street will cook your catch so that is where we went. We handed the chef the mahi the boys caught, they asked us how we wanted it cooked and it tasted fantastic. The freshest. So delicious and definitely an awesome experience on our Key West and Miami family trip itinerary.

Day 4 – Family Boat Day at Snipes Point
We rented a boat which is a MUST DO in Key West and rode out over the flats to Snipes Point, which is a popular sandbar. Make sure and add this to your Key West and Miami family trip itinerary because it is guaranteed fun for the whole family!
Then there was a dance party.
Later, we had dinner at SHOR American Seafood Grill, the house restaurant at Hyatt Vacation Key West. We did the same thing as the previous night and brought in fresh grouper that the boys caught. You can see that we love key lime pie and ate plenty of it on our Key West and Miami family trip itinerary.

Day 5 – Parasailing Over Key West
Next morning, we walked across the street early to see the sunrise at Smather’s Beach and then had breakfast at our hotel.
Later that day, we went parasailing for the very first time ever! We booked with Sunset Watersports Key West a few months in advance. I highly recommend Sunset; they were very professional and had great equipment. The boats were well taken care of.
We ate dinner at the Harbor Walk again – this time it was Conch Republic Seafood Restaurant, which is a great recommendation for any Key West and Miami family trip itinerary.

Day 6 – Everglades National Park
Today, we hit The Overseas Highway, which is Highway 1, and headed north to the Everglades National Park. The Everglades will be our 7th National Park this year and is a stop you must make on your Key West and Miami family trip itinerary. See our posts on Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Dry Tortugas here. As we entered the Everglades, we drove to the Gator Park for an airboat tour. The Gator Park is open every day from 9-5 and the airboat tour is every 30 minutes. It was a cool experience – the ride was about 45 minutes, and we were flying through water that looked like a field. The captain was a nice guy and he shared cool facts and information with us about the Everglades. After the boat ride, we walked over to an open-air building with stadium seating where they held wildlife shows. The show was only about 20 minutes, and the kids loved it so make sure you add this to your Key West and Miami family trip itinerary as your entire family will enjoy it!
This was the first alligator that we saw
Wildlife show
It was hot so we grabbed some popsicles from the little store at Gator Park
We drove about 45 minutes to Miami and checked into the Betsy Hotel. Enjoyed their rooftop pool and bar before dinner. The hotel is definitely a great stay on any Key West and Miami family trip itinerary.
And the Betsy Hotel outdoor shower was amazing with the best shower products, my favorite brand, Malin Goetz. What more could you ask for on a Key West and Miami family trip itinerary? Simply amazing.

Day 7 – Departing From Miami, FL
The next morning, we started with some great juices from the Betsy Hotel restaurant.
We flew out of Miami later that day. That’s a wrap for our Fall trip in FL. We hope you found our Key West and Miami family trip itinerary useful.
Travel feeds the soul, so I am always planning our next trip or two. Next up, Exuma.
Cheers,
Kim
